July 17, 2010 - Richard and Genevieve Herrman's homebred Patriots Glory overcame a slow start to finish strong, winning the $42,120 Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Arapahoe Park. The Game Patriot gelding went from fifth to win the 400-yard event by a half-length in :19.636, earning a speed index of 101. The winner's purse of $19,379 also includes an invite to the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) on November 19 at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.
Saddled by Hipolito Michel-Valverde, Patriots Glory came into the finals as the second-fastest qualifier after losing by a neck to Seis Star Glitter on July 3. Saturday's win, under jockey Russell Vicchrilli, pushed his race record to 10-3-4-0 with earnings of $51,233. Earlier this season he won the Lucille Rowe Derby for Colorado-breds.
Hannas Last Chick put in a solid effort for trainer Robert Sanchez to finish second. The Looking For Chicks filly races for SM Cattle Export Company. Ridden by Cody Wainscott, she earned $8,424.
Lite My Fyre was a game third while finishing a neck back for owner's Dennie and Kris Hill. The Idaho-bred Walk Thru Fire filly out of All American Futurity (G1) winner AB What A Runner is trained by Bret Vickery. Ridden by Paul Greene, she picked up $4,212.
Fastest qualifier Seis Star Glitter led briefly before fading to sixth.
Completing the field was Zoomin Express, Corona Street, Seis Star Glitter, Buddy Corona, Man From Cheyenne and Valliant Feature.
